The Legend and History of Our Historic Ontario Resort
In the year 1856…
a Mr. Holmes receved a grant of land to clear and to put into productiveness. An Inn was erected on the property in 1857 to take care of the loggers that came down the lakes and rivers on their way to the lumber mills. They would tie up at Burleigh Falls and check into the inn overnight.
In 1890, Mr Darcy bought the inn from Mr. Holmes. Then in 1899, the orginal building caught fire and burned to the ground. Thus, The Park Hotel was turned into a fisherman’s paradise and summer resort.
The Park Hotel is romantically situated on a granite island of eleven acres. The hotel overlooks Lovesick and Stoney lakes, as well as the Burleigh River. In front of the hotel, the falls plunge in broken cascades over cyclopean boulders.
In 1956, Peter & Lois Fyffe started a program for the future of the Park Hotel and installed the first swimming pool in the area. Mr. Fyffe then had the first cottage built.
Between the years 1960 and 1967, the motel and remaining cottages were built.
A coffee and gift shop were open for business in 1969.
Enrique and Loren Luis remodeled the present restaurant in 1980. Doug, Ann, Barry and Ruth Wilson purchased the resort in 1987. Barry and Ruth sold out to Doug and Ann in 1990.
In May of 1999, Ian Petraitis bought Ann Wilson’s shares in the hotel and the renovations began, including our own Water & Waste Treatment Plant. The Island Cafe re-opened in the spring of 2000. The Trading Post was purchased in the fall of 2001 and was renovated over the next year.
The Stoney Logger Pub & Restaurant opened its doors for the first time in the spring of 2002 with its full capacity seating that summer.
We unexpectedly lost Doug Wilson in November of 2003. All will sorely miss him.
There have been approximately ten owners of the The Park Hotel during the last one-hundred and thirty-five years, including the present owner Ian Petraitis.
